Janki’s Second Chance: A Story of Survival

Janki’s Second Chance: A Story of Survival

What would you do if you saw someone pleading for help or a poor creature abandoned helplessly on the street? Maybe you don’t care about it, as you can’t imagine the pain, but Earthlings Trust does.

Recently, we got information about Janki, a gentle street dog who lost her babies, spirit, and will to live in a horrific accident. Janki needed medical care and affection; we provided it when no one else did.

Heavily pregnant and alone on the streets, Janki should have prepared to welcome her puppies. Instead, she lay there in pain, trembling, her body waging a war she could not understand. The puppies inside her no longer moved.

She had been hit by a vehicle, leaving her with neurological damage. She also had canine distemper, a devastating infection that affects abandoned and fragile dogs. Janki was battling for her life when Earthlings Trust received the call at 7:30 a.m. It was a race against time, fate, and an inspirational survival story.

The caller told us that a pregnant stray dog was lying motionless, convulsing repeatedly, with puppies stuck in her stomach. With each fit, her small figure trembled like a silent scream for help in a society that had turned aside her suffering. She was alone, with no one to call for help or comfort her.

But, the story had just begun as fate had different plans.

The Rescue: A Race Against Time

Our dedicated rescue group hurried to the scene after learning about the devastating mother. We found her, a thin shape coiled in suffering with short breathing and unidentifiable pain. Her eyes, filled with fear and tiredness, met ours. And at that moment, we realized that she was a fighter.

But, something was wrong. The puppies inside her had stopped moving. As her seizures got worse, her body turned against her. Without wasting a moment, we carefully took her to SOS.

After examining Janki, physicians announced her tragic accident. A car hit her, causing neurological damage. Not only that, she tested positive for *distemper*. It is a fatal virus that attacks dogs’ nervous and respiratory systems. The worst part was that her unborn puppies died in her womb.

A tragic twist of fate. The small souls that should have brought her joy now caused her unspeakable sorrow. Janki would die without immediate surgery.

Janki’s Battle for Life

Earthlings’ team and vet readily prepared for surgery. The surgery was delicate—a life-or-death struggle. The surgeon labored hard to remove the lifeless puppies and give Janki a fighting chance. We buried the small, lifeless paws with love and pain.

The fight continued. After enduring hell, Janki had another thing to fight—distemper. A cruel sickness. It stealthily takes away the dogs’ capacity to eat, walk, and recognize the world. Her neurological impairment worsened. She struggled to balance, her head swaying and her limbs refusing to move properly.

Yet, the team didn’t give up on her.

We diligently fed her, treated her seizures, and provided the best care day and night. Her strongest medicine was love. Every kind gesture, warm meal, and kind support gave Janki the resolve to fight.

The Road to Recovery

Days turned into weeks, and slowly, miracles began to happen.

Janki took her first step after being too weak to stand. It is a short step, but a step. Our teammates cheered her on as if delighted parents witnessed their child walk for the first time. She slipped, fell, and rose.

Once lifeless, her eyes sparkled. Though sad, her tail began to wag. She rediscovered trust and love. Janki smiled after weeks of fighting the illness that nearly took her life.

Now, Janki is well and happy at Earthlings Trust’s distemper recovery area. Though neurological difficulties have caused minor issues, she doesn’t let that stop her. She plays, loves, and welcomes each new member as if to say, “You will be okay. I was once like you. But now look at me.”

Be Aware of Distemper: The Silent Killer

Janki’s story illuminates canine distemper, which kills thousands of stray dogs annually. It affects dogs’ respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems through air and surface contamination from a virus. The symptoms are:

  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Coughing
  • Diarrhea
  • Seizures
  • Paralysis
  • Nasal discharge

Distemper is contagious and deadly. But it’s preventable. A simple immunization can protect a dog from this horrible disease. However, many street dogs go unvaccinated and suffer until they die.

How to Help Stray Dogs Like Janki

Janki survived because God sent us to her. But you can also help stray dogs with distemper and other dangerous diseases.

  • Vaccinate Strays – Contact a local vet or Earthlings Trust (for Noida) to vaccinate street dogs against distemper and rabies.
  • Provide Food and Shelter – Well-fed dogs have stronger immune systems. A bowl of water and leftover food can save a life.
  • Be Their Voice – Don’t leave an injured or sick dog. Call a rescue group. One call can save their lives.
  • Raise Awareness – Many individuals are ignorant of distemper. Share Janki’s story, educate others, and promote vaccinations.
  • Please Adopt, Not Shop – Dogs like Janki deserve homes. Give a rescued dog the love it never had.

The Legacy of Janki

Janki’s recovery from death to love shows compassion’s power. She may not have puppies, but Earthlings Trust and every rescued dog she comforts are her new family.

Her past is horrible, but her present is lovely. And her future? Warmth, belly rubs, and kind hands that rescued her life.

You can be the light for every Janki waiting for a miracle. And if you can’t be the one yourself, at least you can help us. Donate some life and smile at Earthlings Trust, food, medicines, and other useful things for these little abandoned or stray dogs. We provide the necessary treatments and vaccinations for these cuties. So, don’t think much, and let’s help these paws feel the warmth of a soft cushion and a tummy full of food that is best for them.
